How to Create an African Bank Account?

Online

  1. Download the Capitec Bank app by searching for "Capitec Bank" in the Google Play Store, Apple App Store, or Huawei AppGallery. Ensure your device is compatible, as only Android phones running version 5.0 or higher, Apple devices with iOS 11 or above, and Huawei phones with EMUI 10 are supported. Tablets are not supported at this stage.

  2. Open the app on your smartphone and enter your South African ID number to begin the account setup.

  3. Follow the prompts to take selfies for facial recognition verification. This process uses your selfie images to verify your identity securely with the Department of Home Affairs.

  4. Provide any additional personal information requested by the app to complete your account registration.

  5. After completing the registration, activate Capitec Internet Banking through the app, as initial activation must be done this way before accessing Internet Banking on the Capitec website.

  6. Set up a secure app PIN that you will use to log in and manage your Capitec account on the app.

  7. The Capitec app is data-free for MTN, Vodacom, Cell C, and Telkom users, meaning you can use the app without consuming mobile data, or you may use it on a secure WiFi network.

  8. Note that for security reasons, you can only use the Capitec app on one device at a time, so it cannot be used on multiple phones simultaneously.

  1. Use the branch locator on the Capitec Bank website to find the nearest branch to your location.

  2. Bring the required original documents with you, including a South African green barcoded ID, Smart ID card, or passport if you are a citizen or resident. Foreign nationals must bring a valid passport, residence or work permit, and proof of income.

  3. Visit the Capitec branch during operating hours, and speak to a consultant, informing them that you wish to open a new account.

  4. The consultant will guide you through the account opening process and conduct in-person identity verification using your documents.
