However, there aren't some Amex travel perks, and you should have a certain income amount and meet the requirements to qualify.

American Express credit card features

  1. Amex is not accepted not everywhere in Canada. American Express credit cards are widely accepted at department stores, restaurants, gas stations, online stores, and service providers in Canada: Whole Foods Market, 7-Eleven, Best Buy, Walmart, McDonald’s, Starbucks, Burger King, Esso, Petro-Can, and Shell. Chains such as Loblaws and smaller merchants may not accept Amex cards due to the higher fees Amex charges its retail partners. Amex offers benefits and special services to merchants to make the acceptance wider.
  2. Flexible and generous Membership Rewards program. Amex rewards points could be earned and redeemed for mostly anything: groceries, gas, streaming services, a statement credit, dining, hotels, vacation packages, and, of course, travel. In addition, points may be transferred to other loyalty programs, redeemed for miles, bookings from Amex, other services, and Amex Fix Travel Program. The rewards may be earned by business and corporate cards and combined into one account. Points are managed and redeemed online. Use a sign-up bonus to collect faster.
  3. No minimum income is needed if you get the card with Amex itself. Apply through the Amex website online or by phone. Note: your credit score, credit file, income, employment details, and Social insurance number (SIN) still matter.
  4. AMEX offers a range of credit cards and charge cards. Some Amex cards don't have a pre-set spending limit on purchases: they are approved based on your credit record, account history, and personal resources. However, be aware that the balance must be paid monthly if you use a charge card.
  5. Amex cards issued by Amex Bank of Canada are well-known for their travel perks, bonuses, and special services like Amex Travel Online, Fixed Points Travel Program, The Hotel Collection, The Fine Hotels + Resorts, Amex Experiences, American Express Invites, Front Of The Line Presales with entrance to some of the most in-demand events before they go on sale to the general public, Front Of The Line Reserved tickets which provides availability of great seats reserved only for Cardmembers during the public on-sale period for many significant events, etc.

American Express Membership Rewards program

American Express Membership Rewards Program is flexible: collect, redeem, and transfer your rewards points as you like with a highly competitive earning rate. In addition, you could apply with a substantial bonus if you are a new Amex client.

Collect up to 5 points per $1 on eats & drinks, including restaurants, bars, cafes, grocery stores, and food delivery in Canada. In addition, most cards earn 1 point per $1 on any purchase made from your card and 1 point per $1 charge to your card on eligible hotel or car rental bookings made with Amex Travel Online.

Also, you may earn points for transit and gas, streaming services, travel, and everyday spending for personal and business expenses. With Amex Business and Corporate cards, you may earn up to 1.25 points per dollar spent on any eligible purchase.

A corporate card account lets you accumulate Membership Rewards Program points, manage them through the Amex @Work account management system and redeem them for company-level benefits.

Redeem your rewards for airline flights, Amex Fixed Points Travel Program, booking travel, hotel or car rentals, statement credits, gift cards, Amazon shopping, eligible purchases charged to your card, merchandise from Ray-Ban to Dyson and Samsung, donations to charity partners, transfer to other loyalty programs as Aeroplan, British Airways or Marriott Bonvoy points and redeem them for travel expenses or free nights.

The dollar value of your rewards depends on the specific rewards program you choose and what your points would be redeemed for. On average, 1,000 points equal $10 for all eligible purchases. The minimum transfer amount is 1,000 points.

When you transfer Membership Rewards Program points to Aeroplan, British Airways, or Hilton Honors programs, a ratio is 1:1. The most favorable to transfer collected points is for the Aeroplan program, where you get 2 cents for each point. Other airline partners could offer lower costs as 1 or 0.75 cents: Air France, KLM, Asia Miles, Flying Blue, Delta Skymiles, and Etihad Guest. If you transfer to the Marriott Bonvoy program, you could get an excellent ratio: 5 reward points gives 6 Marriott Bonvoy points.

Points redeemed for a Fixed Points Travel Program worth 1.75 cents each allow cardholders to use a fixed number of points to fly inside a fixed zone. Amex Fixed Points Travel Program lets you choose a flight category – such as Canada/U.S., Europe, or Worldwide – and redeem a fixed number of rewards, which covers up to a maximum base ticket. From 15,000 points for popular routes such as Calgary – Vancouver or Toronto – Ottawa with a $300 maximum base ticket price and 20,000 points for Canada — U.S. flights to 100,000 points used to travel worldwide from Canada to Africa, Asia, Australia, the Middle East, New Zealand, South America or South Pacific with $1,700 maximum base ticket price.

To redeem rewards points for a Fixed Points Travel Program, log in to your account, search for a needed flight and redeem the fixed points towards the base ticket price, which is the flight cost excluding taxes, fees, and carrier surcharges.

The Flexible Points Travel Program lets you use your points for any travel expenses like flights, hotels, or car rentals, including taxes, fees, and surcharges charged to your card through American Express Travel Services or American Express Travel Online at a rate of 1,000 Points for $10 statement credits. You can make a payment using your Amex card, points, or a combination of both.

You may redeem points towards purchases from any category made to the card; each point is worth 1 cent.

Membership Rewards points will be earned by the Basic Card member on the amount of purchases, fewer credits, and adjustments. Interest charges, annual fees, other fees, and cash equivalent transactions are not purchases and do not qualify for rewards points.

You may also refer a friend or a family member and earn a referral bonus: rewards, cash back, and miles. To refer a friend, share your referral link, wait before your friend is approved, and get your bonus.

How do American Express credit cards work?

You can use your card anywhere American Express cards are accepted.

  1. In-store. Depending on the terminal type, swipe the card or insert it into the slot. Also, you may use contactless payment if your card and terminal allow: touch your card on the reader
  2. Online. For online shopping, enter your card details during checkout, including your card number, expiration date, and 4-digit security code located on the front of your card
  3. Amex Express Checkout. Eligible card members with an Online Services account can purchase through Amex Express Checkout with participating online merchants and in participating merchant apps by entering their americanexpress.com User ID and Password
  4. Mobile. Amex payments can be made using digital wallets like Apple Pay, Samsung Pay, and Android Pay.

Plan It service allows you to make payments in installments with a fixed monthly fee shown upfront. If you participate in the Plan It program, you will be charged a fee instead of interest. In addition, you can make an installment plan if you have new purchases billed to your current statement. Before getting a new card, consider your affordable amount, needs, annual fee, and interest. In addition, you may sign in to an Online Services account or Amex Mobile App to control your transactions, view statements and recent activity, make payments and monitor rewards.

FAQ

Can I get an American Express card in Canada?

Yes, you can. Apply for Amex prepaid, credit, or charge cards online using the Amex site or by phone. You may choose Amex cards issued by Scotiabank. In this case, contact the bank website or branch and select the needed Amex card to apply.

Where is American Express not accepted in Canada?

American Express is accepted by many places in Canada, from gas stations to online retailers. However, you may find that smaller merchants do not accept Amex cards. It could happen because Amex issues and processes cards by itself and charges merchants higher fees than Visa and Mastercard cards.

However, Amex is working on it and encourages small retailers and chain stores to accept Amex credit cards. Eventually, the only significant stores in Canada which do not accept Amex cards are Loblaws group (except for Shoppers) and Costco Warehouses.

How to qualify for an American Express card?

To qualify for an Amex card, you must be a resident of Canada of the age of majority in your province or territory, have a Canadian credit file, and be ready to provide your personal, contact, income, and employment information (Social insurance number is needed for more straightforward identification and credit score verification). There are no specific minimum income requirements when you apply with Amex by phone, at the branch, or through the official website.
