American Express® Platinum Credit Cards of march 2024

What is Amex Platinum?

Amex Platinum is an American Express premium card with exclusive benefits, travel perks, membership rewards points, comprehensive insurance coverage, metal design, unlimited airport lounge access, Elite hotel status, and a relatively high annual fee.

Like all American Express cards, Amex Platinum cards do not have any minimum income requirements. In addition, Amex Platinum is a charge card with flexible payment options and no pre-set spending limit.

Amex Platinum features

Is Amex Platinum worth it? Let's analyze its features.

  1. Card Membership Rewards. American Express rewards are well-known for their flexibility in collecting and redemption. In general, 1,000 points = $10 for all eligible purchases, but you could earn more for restaurant and travel purchases with any qualifying airline. In addition, the maximum value may be redeemed when you transfer your American Express Membership Rewards points to other loyalty programs like Aeroplan. The American Express Rewards program is often called the best for clients who like traveling and appreciate travel benefits. But also may be earned and redeemed for any other eligible purchases, from groceries to statement credit.

  2. Insurance coverage. The Platinum card offers full insurance, including trip cancellation and purchase protection for 120 days as a premium card. The full list of available insurance coverage is: trip interruption, trip cancellation, travel accident, baggage delay, lost or stolen baggage, hotel burglary, rental car theft and damage, flight delay insurance and extended warranty for one year, out-of-province or country emergency medical insurance for clients under 65 with a term of 15 days and travel emergency assistance.

  3. Changing spending limit for charge cards. The Platinum card's spending limit adjusts to your card usage: credit record, purchases, and payment history. You may pay your balance in full, the minimum amount due, or pay your way, according to the financial goals and strategy. Some versions of Amex Platinum are credit cards.

  4. Travel benefits. Amex Platinum gives:

  • $200 annual travel credit: any single $200 or more travel booking made through the online American Express Travel portal or Platinum Card Travel Service at one select qualifying airline each year of your Platinum card membership;

  • free unlimited lounge access to over 1,300 airport lounges in 140 countries with The American Express Global Lounge Collection: complimentary Priority Pass membership, Plaza Premium Lounges, Delta Sky Club, Airspace Lounges, Escape Lounges - The Centurion Studio Partner, Executive Lounges by Swissport, The Centurion Lounge and Studio locations worldwide. With free complimentary membership, you must present your Priority Pass Membership Card (or Digital Priority Pass Membership Card) to get airport lounge access through Priority Pass and present your American Express Platinum card to access the Plaza Premium lounges;

  • an automatic advanced status in hotel programs: Marriott Bonvoy Gold Elite status, Hilton Honors Gold status, Radisson Rewards Gold status. Choosing these accommodations to stay, you may get a free room upgrade, bonus points, late check-out or early check-in;

  • Amex Fine Hotels + Resorts benefits when booking one of their 1,100 hotels: guaranteed early check-in and late check-out, free room upgrade, complimentary daily breakfast for two;

  • The Hotel Collection bookings let you receive up to a USD 100 hotel credit at participating hotels on qualifying room charges, a room upgrade, and a one-category room upgrade at check-in. Platinum Cardmembers receive access to the travel benefits at over 600 participating hotels and resorts in over 30 countries when booking a minimum two-night stay with American Express Travel charging the entire cost from their Amex Platinum Card;

  • The International Airline Program allows clients to receive discounts when purchasing tickets on participating airlines such as Air Canada, British Airways, Lufthansa, KLM, and others. The purchase must be made over the phone through Platinum Travel or online at American Express Travel and paid in full with an American Express Platinum card in the Platinum Cardmember’s name;

  • $100 NEXUS Card Statement Credit;

  • Benefits at Toronto Pearson International Airport;

  • Exclusive card benefits on American Express Travel Online: access to deals on prepaid hotels and car rental bookings, offers that earn you statement credits on eligible purchases.

  1. Platinum Concierge. Ready to assist concierge service available by phone anytime, 24/7.

  2. Front Of The Line and American Express Experience Cardmember benefits: exclusive access to tickets presales, reserved tickets, special offers, dining and events, private shopping, and wellness.

  3. Design. American Express Platinum card is precision-cut and engraved with a preferred metal card design.

  4. Fees. The annual fee is relatively high: up to $699, a fee for additional cards, and other fees may apply. A $699 fee is the main thing to consider to understand if the Amex Platinum card's benefits and rewards are worth it in your specific case.
    The interest rate is 20,99% when the interest accrues depending on whether it is a credit card or a charge card with no pre-set spending limit. Foreign transaction fees are usually 2.5%, except for a Scotiabank Amex Platinum card that waives this fee. Other fees for the Platinum and Business Platinum cards include only funds advance, dishonored payment, and points reinstatement fees.

  5. A welcome bonus. You may get up to 80,000 bonus points worth up to $1 600. American Express often announces different types of welcome bonuses.

Amex Platinum versions

American Express is a large credit card issuer that also processes its cards. The only Big Five Bank in Canada offering an American Express Platinum card is Scotiabank.

  2. Business Platinum Card from American Express is a premium card for small- and medium-sized businesses. All due balances must be repaid every month. In addition, 90-day-Purchase Protection Plan and Buyer’s Assurance Protection Plan are included.

  5. Scotiabank American Express Platinum Card is an Amex Platinum card, but it has many features and is different from Platinum cards provided by Amex itself. Scotiabank Amex Platinum is a credit card; its annual fee is lower — $399, with each supplementary card for $99. However, many other fees may be applied, including a $48 dishonored fee.
    The main feature is that the card doesn't have any foreign transaction fees, which could be a superb option for a traveler. Scotiabank is the only central bank in Canada that saves you 2.5% on foreign transaction fees on foreign currency transactions. Note: the exchange rates are applied.
    With a Scotiabank Amex Platinum card, you earn 2 Scene+ points for every $1 spent on all your eligible purchases. And may earn up to $2,100 in value in your first 14 months, including up to 60,000 welcome bonus Scene+ points. You can earn 3 Scene+ points per CAD$ spent on hotel, and car rental bookings made through Scene+ Travel charged from your Scotiabank Platinum American Express card. Scene+ points could be redeemed for travel purchases, entertainment, groceries, dining, and shopping. In addition, you may use the Points for Credit to receive a statement credit on your Scotiabank Platinum American Express Card.
    Scotiabank's interest rate is lower than that of Amex — 9.9%. But unlike American Express cards, the minimum credit limit is $10,000.
    Fill insurance coverage includes rental car collision loss, trip cancellation, travel accident, and new mobile device insurance. In addition, the Scotiabank Amex Platinum card provides travel card benefits such as complimentary airport lounge access with Priority Pass and Plaza Premium lounges, Platinum concierge, Platinum VIP Offers+, and Hertz #1 Club Gold Membership.
    The Platinum credit card program is issued and administered by the credit card issuer, Bank of Nova Scotia, under a license from American Express.
    With AIR MILES Co-branded Amex Platinum card and Scotiabank Amex Platinum card, you don't obtain some American Express Platinum cardholders travel benefits like annual travel credit, Elite hotel status, Gold status, Amex welcome bonus, Amex Travel portal points and booking, Fine hotels benefits and other.

American Express Platinum card rewards

American Express Membership Rewards are flexible and can be earned by various methods and redeemed for many things.

With a Platinum card, you collect 3 points per dollar spent on eligible dining and food delivery, 2 points per $1 spent on eligible travel purchases like flights, tours, and hotels, and 1 point per dollar spent on all other eligible purchases such as groceries or even luxury goods and one additional point on Amex Travel Online on eligible hotel or car rentals booking.

The Hotel Collection bookings and Fine Hotels + Resorts bookings are not qualified for the Bonus Membership Rewards points offer; only prepaid Fine Hotels and prepaid hotels booked from the Hotel Collection bookings are eligible for the offer.

Redeem your Membership Rewards points for qualifying airline flights, Amex Fixed Points Travel Program, booking travel or hotel, statement credits, streaming services, gift cards, Amazon shopping, merchandise, transfer to other loyalty programs such as Aeroplan, British Airways, or Marriott Bonvoy points and redeem them for travel purchases or a free night.

The dollar value of your rewards depends on the specific rewards program you choose and what your points would be redeemed for. In general 1,000 points = $10 for all eligible purchases. The minimum transfer amount is 1,000 points.

You can transfer rewards points to Aeroplan, British Airways, or Hilton Honors programs at a 1:1 ratio, and each Aeroplan point is worth 2 cents. Air France, KLM, Asia Miles, Flying Blue, Delta Skymiles, and Etihad Guest are other airline partners. Transferred to Marriott Bonvoy, 5 Amex card membership rewards points give 6 Marriott Bonvoy points.

Points redeemed for a Fixed Points Travel Program worth 1.75 cents each allow cardholders to fly inside a fixed zone for a set fee and tax. American Express Fixed Points Travel Program lets you choose a flight category – such as Canada/U.S., Europe, or Worldwide – and redeem a fixed number of rewards points, which covers up to a maximum base ticket. From 15,000 points for popular routes such as Calgary – Vancouver or Toronto – Montreal with a full base ticket price of $300 to 100,000 points needed for worldwide traveling: Canada to destinations in Africa, Asia, Australia, Middle East, New Zealand, South America or South Pacific with $1,700 maximum base ticket price.

To redeem rewards points for a Fixed Points Travel Program, log in to your account, search for a needed flight and redeem the fixed points towards the base ticket price, which is the flight cost excluding taxes, fees, and carrier surcharges.

You can try the Flexible Points Travel Program to use your points to pay for your travel expenses, including taxes, fees, and surcharges charged to your card through American Express Travel Services or the American Express Travel portal at a rate of 1,000 Points for a $10 statement credit. Within 5 — 10 business days from the booking date, you will receive a statement credit for the points you redeemed against your purchase. Statement credits on your card account should not exceed the aggregate amount of the eligible purchase on your card. You can pay with your Amex Platinum card, with your Membership Rewards points, or a combination of both.

Membership Rewards points will be earned by the Basic Card member on the amount of purchases, fewer credits, and adjustments. Interest charges, annual fees, other fees, and cash equivalent transactions are not purchases and do not qualify for Membership Rewards points.

Business and Corporate Amex Platinum cards allow you to earn 1.25 reward points for all purchases and accumulate them into one account to redeem for a company's needs.
